SSDI Benefits After a Car Accident

Published on June 10th, 2021 by Eric Slepian

The aftermath of a car accident can be extremely scary as your life changes and you feel like you’re stepping into so much uncertainty. If you sustained a debilitating or life-changing injury, you may be left wondering how you’ll work and fulfill responsibilities as you did before. With social security benefits, you won’t have to worry as much. But will you qualify?

Bone or Back Injury

Fractured bones and back injuries can both be extremely debilitating and take a long time to heal, and the Social Security Administration understands that. The SSA has a listing specifically for fractures that prevent you from being able to walk or use your arms for at least 12 months. With this type of injury, you would need crutches or a wheelchair, and wouldn’t be able to use your arm or hand to pick things up. Serious back disorders or injuries can also qualify you for benefits, as they can be extremely debilitating and painful to live with.

Soft Tissue Injuries

These types of injuries include problems with your ligaments, tendons, muscles, nerves, blood vessels, and skin. If you have a soft tissue injury or burn on a part of your body that affects its usage – for example, not being able to eat, see, use your arms, walk – then this is covered within the SSA listing. If you received burns from the accident and are significantly limited in what you can do because of them, this is also generally covered.

PTSD

Post traumatic stress disorder after a car accident is not uncommon. If the accident was traumatizing or caused you extreme stress and you’re left with a debilitating or severe anxiety disorder as a result of it, you may be entitled to SSI benefits. While it generally is harder to get approved for benefits for mental issues or disorders, having a strong, experienced lawyer on your side will increase your chances.

Traumatic Brain Injury

If your car accident was severe and you hit your head hard on the steering wheel, dashboard, or anywhere else, you may be left with a brain injury. If they are severe, you may not be able to speak, walk, see, or complete day to day tasks. If you are severely impaired or are at all affected by a brain injury, you will most likely qualify for benefits.
