New treatment could make migraines less disabling

Published on December 12th, 2017 by Eric Slepian

People who experience frequent, debilitating migraine headaches can struggle to perform even the most basic daily tasks as a result of nausea, pain and sensitivity to light and sound. Under these circumstances, holding down a job can be all but impossible.

However, recent research has led to some promising results that could help migraine sufferers find some relief from their symptoms.

First treatments “actually aimed at the disorder”

Current migraine treatments are intended to treat conditions other than migraines, like epilepsy and high blood pressure. These treatments cause serious side effects including severe fatigue.

However, two new drugs have reportedly reduced the number of migraines participants experience and can prevent the symptoms that come with migraines. There are no side effects, either.  As an author on one of the studies says, the drugs “offer the first migraine treatment that’s actually aimed at the disorder.”

Limitations of the study

While the results of the study are exciting, there are limitations. First, the drug was not effective for every patient. Further, the placebo effect proved to be quite powerful, which calls into question the true benefits of the drugs.

It should also be noted that the drugs are expected to be quite expensive, and they likely will not be available until at least next year. In other words, while the future of migraine treatment could produce promising results, immediate options remain limited, inaccessible and ineffective.

What you can do if you experience migraines

If you suffer from frequent, debilitating migraines, then it is crucial for you to get the help you need sooner, rather than later. This includes financial relief if you cannot work because of your condition.

While migraines are not specifically identified as a disabling condition, they can meet the criteria if they are chronic and severe. Should you decide to apply for benefits, you can discuss your case with an attorney who is experienced in navigating the Social Security system and understands how to present an effective claim that results in disability benefits.
